How high Oil Prices Hurt Canada's Economy

The real story about oil prices is not that they are elevated now, but that they will remain elevated six to 12 months from now.

Geopolitical events have no doubt contributed to the recent upswing in energy prices, but what really makes them market movers is the fundamental gap between growing demand for energy and limited supply. Global crude demand rose at an annual rate of over 3% in 2004, the fastest pace in 24 years and more than three times its long-term average. China, India and the rest of East Asia account for half that growth. The timing of this demand surge couldn't be worse: it occurs just as OPEC spare capacity has fallen to a record low of about 600,000 barrels a day. Far from a temporary spike, relatively high oil prices are here to stay, at least as long as the world economy in general, and China in particular, continues to grow at today's robust pace. Look for prices to average between US$45 and US$50 in the next 12 months.

What is the impact on the Canadian economy? Canada is a large exporter of energy. More than half the country's production of oil and natural gas is exported, almost all to the United States. But Canada is also an oil importer--mostly from North Sea sources--to satisfy its own refinery feedstock requirements. Add all that up and you end up with an energy trade surplus of roughly 3% of GDP--nice to have, but not sizable enough to radically alter the economy's destiny......

Cheap Gas

MLM-Income Diversification

I am often surprised in the world the number of people who seem to have strong opinions of things they know very little about. We live in a world where 5% of the people have 95% of the money and people are quick to point out flaws, and quicker to say that the 5% at the top are just lucky.

I read recently a great saying by Edison "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. " A good MLM opportunity is no different than any other business opportunity, 5% of the people are going to be really good at it and 95% of the people are going to find all sorts of reasons why it doesnt work.

To me the most important thing is to understand the opportunity for what it is and most importantly what it isnt. It is not something you should stop everything else you are doing and pursue it as your primary income stream. I myself are involved with several different businesses, both traditional and one MLM. Even if Bitron creates for me only $100 on an ongoign basis that is $100 I never have to worry about. For the $40 it costs me is this such a bad thing? I have lost tens of thousands of dollars in other business ventures but I don't see business as a bad thing, I just know more things not to do. MLM is not the be all end all but I beleive it plays its part very well if you follow the system.

Bitron in my car

I just wanted to share my experience with the Bitron products and how well they have worked for me. I drive a 2003 Ford Focus ZX-3 and I currently have about 95,000 KMs on it. That is about 28 months worth of driving, so as you can tell I drive a fair bit. One of the challenges I face is that I am terrible at keeping up with regular maintenance. So my car was begging to idle rough and would sometimes stall at stop signs.

The first thing I noticed instantly after putting the Bitron products in my car is that it started running noticably smoother and quieter and it no longer had any trouble idling. The second thing Bitron did for me was that it reduced the amount of gas I was using by about 20%, which for me is pretty substantial. Vancouver's housing bubble

As housing prices continue to rise here in Vancouver and people continue the trend of being over mortgaged I think we are heading into crisis mode if you are a young new home owner. It was the great Napolean who told us "those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it". Even though I was not old enough to know what was going on with the markets in the early 80s I see great similarities in the way things are going today.

We seem to be teetering on the edge of a big recession. Consumers have been continually using home equity loans to fun things like vacations, home improvments and just random crap. So what happens if housing prices begin to fall? So does the equity we have in our houses, and if that equity hits the negative why would anyone want to keep paying for a mortgage? Our ATM we like to call a house is going to run dry here soon, and I for one have a backup plan....
